Together with the Law Society, the Bar Council recently hosted the President of the All China Lawyers Association (ACLA) Mr. Yu Ning and regional bar association leaders from Zhejiang, Guangdong and Guizhou. 

SOME of the most vulnerable children in society will lose out as a result of plans to slash legal representation in publicly funded family law cases. 

In the first three years of practice, newly qualified practitioners are required to complete 45 hours of continuing professional development (CPD), including at least nine hours of Advocacy Training and three hours of Ethics (the “New Practitioners’ Programme”). 

The Bar Standards Board has now formally increased the compensation limit in respect of findings of inadequate professional service from £5,000 to £15, 000 following its meeting in May. 

All practising barristers are subject to CPD in 2008. The Bar Standards Board would like to welcome Mandie Lavin as Director of the Bar Standards Board. Mandie joined the Board on 23 June from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB), where she was Director of Fitness to Practise and Legal Affairs. 

THE Bar Council, which represents over 15,000 barristers in England and Wales, has released its first ever Bar Handbook. Published by LexisNexis, the compendium is designed to provide a portable and concise single point of reference for all the guidance and advice published by the Bar Council in its representative capacity. Designed in a user-friendly format which follows the chronology of a career at the Bar, the Handbook will be an invaluable tool for all practitioners, whether QCs or those just setting out on their career at the Bar. 

From 18-20 June, the Bar Council hosted a delegation of seventeen advocates from the Bombay Bar Association and solicitors from the Bombay Incorporated Law Society. 

The International Law Book Facility is a UK-based registered charity.
