The Bar Standards Board launched a comprehensive Chambers monitoring scheme on the 18 October 2010. 

Changes to the law on murder, introduced by the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, have come into force.

The International Committee of the Bar Council is seeking barristers’ chambers willing to offer placements for 12 young Chinese Lawyer for 11 weeks, from 24 January and 15 April 2011 (with the week beginning 31 January off for Chinese New Year). 

On Saturday 25 September, in the Victorian splendour of the Law Society, International Committee member Amanda Pinto QC spoke - rather subversively bearing in mind the venue - to a varied and interested audience of young lawyers from around the world, about how to instruct the Bar and the benefits of coming directly to the Bar. 

Commencement of pupillage 

A period of pupillage is not valid unless and until it has been registered with the Bar Standards Board. All pupils will receive confirmation of registration by email. 

On the eve of the retirement of their first chairman, Baroness Prashar, on 1 October the Judicial Appointments Commission launched a slender book of essays, Judicial Appointments, Balancing Independence, Accountability and Legitimacy, in which nine highly qualified authors dissect the background, the workings and the challenges of the 21st Century appointments system. 

The BSB’s current consultation on entity regulation is asking fundamental questions about how barristers will work in the future, and how they should be regulated, writes Samuel Condry. 

The Bingham Appeal was established to raise the funds required to establish and expand the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law.

The BSB workshop will cover the changes in regulation brought about by the Legal Services Act 2007 and the new regulatory entities that affect the profession, including the Bar Standards Board, Legal Services Board and the Office of Legal Complaints. 

A delegation of Japanese lawyers led by Mr. Hatano Setsuo of the Japanese Bar Association visited the Bar Council on Monday 20 September as part of a larger visit to Europe to investigate the various justice systems and in particular the criminal jury system, which has recently been introduced in Japan.
