Carl Teper mourns the loss of Rosie Samwell-Smith, Principal Lecturer and Director of the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law.
Rosie Samwell-Smith (Mrs Rosie Keane), who died in October 2010, was formerly Principal Lecturer and Director of the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law (“ICSL”), which is now The City Law School.
Rosie made an outstanding contribution to those training for practice at the Bar. She combined teaching with practice and she was also a Special Immigration Adjudicator.
Rosie brought to the ICSL experience from the world of television and applied her talent to the creation and production of a renowned Legal Video Training Series.
The series, covering advocacy, negotiation and conference skills, were well ahead of their time. They became widely recognised nationwide and abroad as important tools for preparing students for practice at the Bar. They significantly raised the standard of vocational legal education; as did the decision, in 2004, to raise the level of teaching to Masters level.
Rosie was a gifted and talented teacher, always bringing out the best in her students, whilst showing a genuine concern for their welfare. She was held in the very highest regard by colleagues and students alike, and was the ICSL’s finest ambassador.
Rosie was a much loved and treasured friend to many. Her years were not long but her days were full.
