The Bar Council and Law Society jointly hosted Russian Law Week in London from November 5-7. The Bar Council and Law Society have also launched the Russo-British Young Lawyers Exchange programme, which aims to give promising young lawyers from both jurisdictions an opportunity better to understand each other’s legal system and professional standards.
Following an opening address by the Rt. Hon. Chris Grayling MP, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, and a keynote speech by Alderman David Wootton, Lord Mayor of the City of London, there were two days of workshops featuring leading Russian lawyers, academics and officials. The topics included arbitrating commercial disputes in Russia, Russian court practices and proposals for change to the Russian Civil Code.
It was attended by Dr Alexander Yakovenko, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in London.
Bar Chairman, Michael Todd QC said: “Russia is a key jurisdiction for us, particularly of late, at a time when many Russian parties are looking towards the UK, both for advice and to resolve their disputes.”
