Charging decisions in non-contested regulatory and traffic offences should be returned to the police, the Attorney General has proposed.
“These volume offences require little review,” Dominic Grieve MP said in a recent speech. “I believe that the prosecutor is best placed to add value... when advising police in relation to large scale and serious offences,” he added. Grieve also underlined the importance of prosecutorial independence and a “full and frank discussion” between the CPS and police to improve the preparation of evidence.
