The purpose of the BPTC is to ensure that students intending to become barristers acquire the skills, knowledge of procedure and evidence, attitudes and competence to prepare them, in particular, for the more specialised training in the 12 months of pupillage. The BPTC can be completed full time over one academic year or part-time for two years. All students are required to be admitted to an Inn of Court before registration on the Bar Professional Training Course.

Once you have successfully completed the BPTC you will be called to the Bar by your Inn. During the BPTC year and before Call can take place you will also have to undertake 12 qualifying sessions with your Inn.

Applications for a place on the BPTC must be made through the Bar Standards Board’s central applications system; BPTC Online. To make an application, please visit www.barprofessionaltraining.org.uk. Applications can only be accepted by online submission.
