The Court of Justice of the European Union gave a preliminary ruling, deciding, among other things, that Council Directive (EC) 2004/83 should be interpreted as meaning that a residence permit, once granted to a refugee, could be revoked, either pursuant to art 24(1) of that directive, where there were compelling reasons of national security or public order within the meaning of that provision, or pursuant to art 21(3) of that directive, where there were reasons to apply the derogation from the principle of non-refoulement laid down in art 21(2) of the same directive.
