European Union – Employment. Article 5 of Council Directive (EC) 93/104 and the first paragraph of art 5 of Directive (EC) 2003/88 should be interpreted as not requiring the minimum uninterrupted weekly rest period of 24 hours to which a worker was entitled to be provided no later than the day following a period of six consecutive working days, but required that rest period to be provided within each seven-day period. The Court of Justice of the European Union so held in a preliminary ruling in proceedings concerning the grant to the applicant, in his capacity as worker, of one compulsory weekly rest day for each seven-day period.
