European Union – Employment. Article 17(3)(c)(iii) of Directive (EC) 2003/88 should be interpreted as meaning that the member states could not derogate, with regard to certain categories of firefighters recruited by the public fire services, from all the obligations arising from the provisions of that directive, including art 2 thereof, which defined, in particular, the concepts of 'working time' and 'rest periods'. The Court of Justice of the European Union so held, among other things, in a preliminary ruling in proceedings concerning the remuneration of services performed within the fire service in the town of Nevilles, Belgium.
