The Administrative Court declared that the claimant Nigerian national had been unlawfully detained for 1 day, 18 hours and 10 minutes, as the defendant Secretary of State had held him because of outstanding confiscation proceedings, which had not been a permitted purpose. However, there was no compensatory loss to the claimant and nominal damages would be fixed at £1.
