Harrod and others v Chief Constable of West Midlands Police and others

Employment – Discrimination. The Court of Appeal, Civil Division dismissed an appeal against a decision of the Employment Appeal Tribunal dismissing the employee police officers' claim for age discrimination under s 19 of the Equality Act 2010 where they had been required to retire early Police Pensions Regulations 1987; SI 257:87. The decision to reduce officer headcount to the fullest extent available had been taken in the interests of achieving certainty of costs reduction and it was not for the Tribunal to devise an alternative scheme involving the loss of fewer posts.
