Solemn procedure – Defective representation. High Court of Justiciary: Allowing an appeal by an appellant who was convicted of three charges involving sexual offences against two young girls in foster placements with him and his wife, the court held that the appellant had instructed the solicitor advocate who represented him at trial to present a line of defence that a rule or protocol was operated in his house whereby he would not be left alone with one of the complainers and that he had been deprived of his right to a fair trial by the failure to present it.
