Libel and slander – Defamatory words. The claimants (a solicitor, a solicitors' firm and a company) brought a libel claim against the defendant, concerning allegedly defamatory words contained in a press release on Facebook and a webinar. The claim arose from a dispute over the conduct of litigation, concerning the alleged mis-selling of off-plan property in Cyprus. The Queen's Bench Division allowed the defendant's application to strike out certain aspects of the claim related to the webinar and the third defendant. Concerning the remaining parts of the claim, the court considered the meaning of the allegedly defamatory words, but concluded that, on the evidence, it had not been established that the Facebook post had caused serious harm to the reputation of the first and the second claimants, within the meaning of s 1 of the Defamation Act 2013.
