*R (on the application of Conway) v Secretary of State for Justice (Humanists UK and others intervening)

Criminal law – Suicide. The blanket ban on assisted suicide in the Suicide Act 1961 s 2 did not constitute a disproportionate and incompatible interference with the right of respect for private life, under art 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Accordingly, the Divisional Court refused the claimant's application for a declaration of incompatibility, and held that R (on the application of Pretty) v Director of Public Prosecutions ([2002] 1 All ER 1) and R (on the application of Nicklinson and another) v Ministry of Justice; R (on the application of AM) v Director of Public Prosecutions ([2014] 3 All ER 843) were not binding.
