The protocol in the United Nations Convention Relating to the Statue of Refugees (1951) as a matter of international law applied to Sovereign Base Areas after the former colony of Cyprus had been granted independence, as the UK had acceded it without reservation relating to SBAs. However, the Supreme Court held that the Convention did not, by its terms, entitle the respondents to be resettled in the UK.
