*Law Society of England and Wales v Schubert Murphy (a firm)

Law Society – Duty of care. It was arguable that the defendant Law Society owed a duty of care to solicitors and others who used its online 'Find a Solicitor' facility and further inquiry into the facts was required. Accordingly, the Court of Appeal, Civil Division, in dismissing the Law Society's appeal, held that the judge had been correct to refuse its application for summary judgment or to strike out the claimant's claim for damages for negligence and contribution in respect of losses it and its client had suffered as a result of the online response to its search.
