Human rights – Right to respect for family and private life. The regimes for the bulk interception of communications under s 8(4) of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 and for the acquisition of communications data under Ch II violated art 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The European Court of Human Rights further held that those regimes violated the art 10 rights of the journalist and newsgathering organisation applicants in the second of the joined cases.
