Attorney General

2 years FTC commencing 1st August

Applications are invited for the appointment of Attorney General for St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha are together an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Each Island has its own government but share the same Governor and Attorney General.

The Attorney General is the principal legal adviser to the Governor and governments of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha and gives wide ranging expert legal advice. They are responsible for overseeing all legislative drafting and the management of the legislative programme. The Attorney General is also an ex-officio member of both the Executive Council and Legislative Council of St Helena and the Island Council of Ascension.

The Attorney General is constitutionally responsible for criminal prosecutions and is the nominal party in all civil proceedings for and against the Crown. They are also responsible for drafting contracts and other legal instruments for all three governments.

The Attorney General is based in St Helena and is supported by chambers for which they have overall responsibility. The Attorney General’s Chambers is staffed by the Attorney General, a Solicitor General, a number of Crown Counsel, a Legislative Drafter and support staff on St Helena. A further Crown Counsel is based on Ascension.

Applications are invited from candidates who are qualified as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales and have substantial post qualification experience which should include civil and criminal litigation and providing legal advice to Government.

Our Benefits Package Includes:

• Salary: £85,000-£90,000 pa, depending on experience and qualifications

• Relocation Allowances: £3,000-£5,200, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh

• Annual Pension Contribution of 7.5% of salary

• Annual Leave of 30 days per annum plus Public Holidays
