St Helena Island, South Atlantic - 2 years FTC available immediately

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The island’s team of Law Officers is currently made up of the Attorney General with two PAs, two Legislative Drafters, Crown Prosecutor, Senior Crow n Counsel (Civil), Crown Counsel (for Ascension Island), Crown Counsel (Civil), Crown Counsel (Commercial) and Crown Counsel (Contracts).

As principal legal adviser to the Governor and the governments of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha you will provide wide-ranging expert legal advice.  No two days will be the same in this role, and you will carry out a broad and varied range of activities with overall responsibility for all Crown Proceedings. The role is diverse, from overseeing all legislative drafting, management of the legislative programme, criminal prosecutions, drafting contracts and other legal instruments.  Overseeing the Attorney General’s Chambers, you will be responsible for the leadership and development of the legal and administrative team.

You are a qualified and experienced solicitor or barrister with a background in both civil and criminal litigation, including higher court advocacy across the public and private sectors.  As well as your broad range of experience, you’ll bring effective leadership and management skills, and demonstrable experience of leading and developing high performing teams.  A high level of communication, analytical, planning, influencing skills, and interpersonal attributes (including influencing, networking and diplomacy) are critical in this role. Showing unequivocal compliance with Nolan Principles and with standards and rules of conduct required by the professional’s regulator you have maintained your practicing certificate and CPD, keeping records that demonstrate your ongoing education and competence.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

Our Benefits Package Includes:

  • An International Supplement, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh
  • Relocation Allowances, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh
