On 15 June the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC) held a conference of its 30 bar association members, to discuss how it can help to rebuild the Haitian justice sector, which is an even worse state as a result of the 12 January earthquake than it already had been before.
ILAC has been involved in Haiti for 5 years running Legal Aid clinics. The Bar Council is a member of ILAC and took part in this conference which generated a number of useful ideas.
Whereas the governmental donors have made available 225m US dollars to help rebuild destroyed infrastructure and pay for staff and training, international know how is urgently needed in a system with poorly trained professionals, and mired in corruption.
The Bar Council is now considering joining forces with ILAC member Lawyer without Borders to help with expertise to bring about better conduct and discipline in the legal profession.
