We are currently looking for more legal academics and barristers who may be keen to be involved in this important work. External Examining work consists of two to three visits to a provider over a year, extensive sampling of student work and writing interim and final reports. A fee is payable on receipt of each report which totals £1,600 per year for a provider with one site and £2,400 per year for a provider with two sites. A monitoring visit generally takes one to two days including reading documentation, visiting and commenting on a draft report. No fee is payable to practitioners but all expenses are met. Lay people can claim a fee of £150 per meeting or £300 per day.
We would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in becoming involved with this work. Please send your CV to Janet Pugh (
JPugh@BarStandardsBoard.org.uk), together with a covering letter stating why you are interested in the role and indicating your area of legal specialisation and/or experience of higher education.

The vocational stage of training for the Bar (the Bar Professional Training Course) is delivered by providers at sites in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham. In order to assure quality and standards, the BSB carefully monitors the course by carrying out visits to all providers each year and approving, appointing and regulating a system of External Examiners.
