It is a simple process and, although the questions are voluntary, the information is very valuable to the Bar Council and the Bar Standards Board. It will inform policies related to, and enable us to demonstrate our progress towards, widening access to the Bar and strengthening
diversity within the profession, and will help us to challenge inaccurate public perceptions about the current profile of the Bar. The analysed data will enable us to identify any trends and is key to enabling us to meet our statutory duties under the Equality Act 2010.
Your sensitive data is completely confidential and will never be passed to third parties. We will only ever publish aggregated, anonymised data showing the diversity of the profession as a whole.
Please visit the Barrister Connect portal (
https://www.barristerconnect.org.uk/login/) to update your monitoring information. The monitoring page can be found under the ‘Personal Details’ tab.
Your user number to hand can be found on your Member Services card. Alternatively, it can be provided by the Bar Council’s Records Office (020 7242 0934). If you have forgotten your password, please click the ‘forgotten password’ link on the home page.
If you have any queries about this data collection exercise, please contact the Bar Council’s Equality & Diversity Team via

Many of you recently used the online Barrister Connect portal to renew your practising certificate. The Barrister Connect portal is not used solely for the authorisation to practise process; it is also used to allow barristers to update their diversity information. So far, there has been a very low response rate to this monitoring section, so we would be grateful if you could spare just a few minutes of your time to log into the portal and update your details.
