Bar earnings up

Total annual earnings of barristers rose by 5% to £1.5bn in 2012-13, the latest year for which figures are available, making an average yearly income of £118,000, compared with £108,000 the year before. The rise, which has been fuelled by booming commercial work, highlights the gulf in the profession, where some junior barristers do not earn the minimum wage.
