We have exciting opportunities for newly qualified and experienced lawyers to join our industry leading legal and claims team.

Steamship Mutual insures marine liabilities (P&I risks) and on a mutual basis, which is why we are known as a “P&I Club” and what you probably call clients, we call “members” (the insured).  Service is at the heart of everything we do at Steamship Mutual, and we have a trusted and respected reputation. With 210 employees worldwide, the main office is based near Liverpool Street station, London, and we have offices in Bermuda, Brazil, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore.

The Position

As part of our legal and claims team, you will be responsible for handling a wide range of claims for our shipowner and charterer members.  But we don’t just pay claims.  We provide legal support of the highest standard, and because we insure liabilities, we often find ourselves participating in and directing complex litigation and arbitration in London and many other jurisdictions worldwide.

You will almost certainly get to travel and meet members, lawyers, and other professionals from all over the world, and will play an integral role in promoting and sustaining relationships between the Club and members.

What we are looking for:

You should be a bright and enthusiastic qualified barrister, solicitor, or lawyer.  You might already be a successful high-flier, or newly qualified.  Or you might be somewhere in-between, perhaps even feeling a little lost and wondering where your career is heading.

A shipping law background would give you a running start, but we welcome applications from any lawyer with an interest in dispute resolution, commerce, and world events (so many of which have an impact on shipping, and hence on what we do, in one way or another).  You should take pride in the quality of your work, in finding solutions and in being respectful and fair in all your dealings with members, colleagues and all those with whom we deal.  If you are right for us, and we are right for you, great career opportunities await.

What you will get:

  • A rewarding career with an opportunity to put your legal knowledge, eye for detail and way of thinking to practical good use, and to expand that knowledge rapidly in a collaborative, supportive and friendly working environment.
  • Great work-life balance initiatives, including a competitive hybrid working policy.
  • A clear and transparent career pathway – offering you continued support with enhancing your skills and creating employment development opportunities.
  • Free educational access to the Protection & Indemnity Qualification, created by the International Group of P&I Clubs.
  • An attractive benefits package which includes private healthcare, and a generous employer’s contribution to the Steamship Group Pension Fund.
  • We also provide a competitive health subsidy, and access to our comprehensive wellbeing and savings programme throughout the year, to create an environment that supports everyone’s mental and physical health.
