St Helena Island, South Atlantic – 2 years FTC available immediately
£67,500 pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement
Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The island has its own legal system and legislature, applying relevant English law where no local law exists. There are no lawyers in private practice in St Helena, so you will be the sole source of independent qualified legal advice.
Your team will include a Deputy Public Solicitor, a criminal lawyer, and two civil lawyers, plus appointing and supervising the Island’s Lay Advocates as well as two CILEX trainees. You will provide access to justice and contribute to human rights awareness, offering legal services to the public. The range of issues arising is very wide, but criminal issues and disputes feature prominently.
Advising on human rights and constitutional issues, you will conduct civil litigation, advise and represent defendants in criminal proceedings, advise on rights of appeal and represent either the appellant or respondent. You should facilitate and encourage mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution. You will be responsible for proper expenditure and administering the legal aid system, including collecting contributions.
You will appoint, train, assist and supervise Lay Advocates as well as manage the Deputy Public Solicitor, Assistant Public Solicitor, Criminal Defence Solicitor and Civil Solicitor.
You may be asked to assist residents of Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha. Your contract will provide for the cost of continuing professional development.
A qualified solicitor (with Higher Rights of Audience) or barrister with substantial experience of civil and criminal work including advocacy, you must hold a full current practising certificate not subject to any conditions or investigation. You must have an Enhanced Vetting Certificate and/or Certificate of Good Standing from a professional body. With the ability to run complicated litigation you have developed, led and managed a practice.
In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
