CROWN COUNSEL (CIVIL) in the Attorney General’s Chambers

St Helena Island, South Atlantic:2 years Fixed Term Contract

£48k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus generous International Supplement

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. This presents a lifestyle opportunity

The island’s team of Law Officers currently comprises the Attorney General, two Crown Counsel (Civil) Crown Counsel (Criminal) and Crown Counsel (Commercial), with two full-time Legislative Draftspersons, one working remotely. The Chambers are run professionally.

In this responsible role you will give legal advice to all organs of Government. Your effective and professional service in the conduct of civil proceedings will include dealing with pre-action correspondence, taking instructions from clients, drafting documents, advocacy in court, strategically directing such litigation and advising on a variety of government contracts.

Comfortable with tight pressured deadlines, you are a UK or commonwealth qualified solicitor or barrister with experience of commercial contract work and substantial experience of civil litigation, particularly in employment and medical negligence. The court structure is sound.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace.

Our Benefits Package Includes:

  • An International Supplement, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh
  • Relocation Allowances, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh
  • Annual Pension Contribution of 7.5% of salary
  • Annual Leave of 30 days per annum plus Public Holidays
