Recruitment within Employment and Crime Teams at Doughty Street Chambers

Doughty Street Chambers is a multi-disciplinary set of barristers with a truly national and international reputation for excellence, particularly for work involving issues of human rights and civil liberties. We have always had a deep commitment to equality and human rights, are fully committed to non-discrimination and diversity in all of our recruitment for pupillage, tenancy and staff (www.doughtystreet.co.uk/diversity-doughty-street-chambers).

Employment and Discrimination Law Team

The team is recognised in Chambers and Partners and Legal 500 as one of the leading Employment sets in the country and a large proportion of our team are recognised as leaders in this area of work. Our members are frequently involved in high profile, complex and high value claims across the range of employment related litigation including; whistleblowing, discrimination; unfair dismissal, trade union litigation and collective labour disputes acting for both Claimants and Respondents.

The exponential growth and development of the team means that we are now considering applications from practitioners who have developed (or are developing) specialist Employment Practices commensurate with their year of call and who feel they would benefit from our proactive approach to business development, multidisciplinary approach and being part of a highly cohesive, personable and ambitious team.

We welcome applications for tenancy from barristers up to 13 years' call (or equivalent experience) who wish tojoin our modern, dynamic and highly experienced group of practitioners. Applications from prospective tenants interested in practising from our Manchester office base are also welcome.

Applicants must demonstrate a real commitment to specialising in Employment Law and be willing to play an active part to developing their practice individually, as well as part of the wider team.

Please direct expressions of interest to Callum Stebbing (c.stebbing@doughtystreet.co.uk), Practice Manager or for an informal discussion about our team and the work we undertake contact Paras Gorasia (p.gorasia@doughtystreet.co.uk) or David Stephenson (d.stephenson@doughtystreet.co.uk), Joint Heads of the Employment and Discrimination Team.

Crime Team

The Crime Team is the largest practice group in Chambers, working from our offices in London and Manchester, and comprising around 60 practitioners including over 20 QCs. Our barristers act and advise in cases involving the full spectrum of offences in the Crown and Magistrates' Courts. We also specialise in financial crime, regulatory work involving financial, legal and healthcare professionals, appeals to the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, and European Court of Human Rights, judicial review claims arising from criminal issues, extradition, and international crime before the ICC and ad hoc tribunals, and more.

In order to ensure we can continue to provide our clients with the highest level of service, we now seek to recruit two Fixed-Term Tenants to work from our Manchester office and one Fixed-Term Tenant to work from London. Fixed Term Tenants are not distinguished from full members when presented to our clients and our FTT programme is designed to ensure young barristers are given as much support, mentoring and development as possible at the start of their careers. In addition, FTTs benefit from favourable rent arrangements. Our FTTs have an opportunity to draw on hands-on guidance from senior members and the clerks in order to develop a sustainable and well-funded practice before they take on the additional responsibilities and financial commitments of full tenancy.

Applicants will have the relevant experience of courtroom advocacy and will either be a junior tenant at another set or may be in the process of applying for third-six pupillages. A further 18-month fixed term tenancy will be given upon successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.

Prospective applicants are invited to contact Senior Practice Manager, Matthew Butchard (m.butchard@doughtystreet.co.uk), for a confidential discussion and further details.
