St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500. Following the opening of its international airport in October 2017, St Helena is better placed to develop both economically and socially.
The Attorney General’s Chambers is to be made up of the Attorney General, the Solicitor General, Crown Counsel (Community Care), Crown Counsel (Criminal), Crown Counsel (Contract and Commercial), Crown Counsel (Civil), a Legal Executive, two Legislative Draftspersons and a PA to the Attorney General.
The Solicitor General is the Head of Legal Services and Deputy to the Attorney General. They will provide leadership, manage casework and assist the Attorney General in the provision of advice to the governments of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. The Solicitor General will be the line manager to all Crown Counsel in St Helena. The areas of work the Solicitor General will supervise include Administrative law, Civil law (including personal injury and medical negligence), Commercial law, Constitutional law, Criminal law and Employment law.
You will have expertise in at least one of the above areas of law, be flexible and willing to expand your practice. You will be a team player, committed to managing an effective Legal Service. As an experienced UK qualified barrister or solicitor with at least 10 years PQE, you will have experience as a court advocate, be computer literate, and have the ability to mentor junior staff. Your strong analytical and communication skills should be complemented by a flexible approach.
