European Union – Employment. Article 4(1) of Council Directive (EEC) 79/7 should be interpreted as precluding legislation of a member state which, in the case of 'vertical' part-time work, excluded days not worked from the calculation of days in respect of which contributions had been paid and therefore reduced the unemployment benefit payment period, when it was established that the majority of vertical part-time workers were women who were adversely affect by such legislation. The Court of Justice of the European Union so held, among other things, in a preliminary ruling in proceedings concerning the determination of the basis for the calculation of the duration of unemployment benefit for 'vertical' part-time workers.
