We are offering a great opportunity to join our small, friendly legal team, to undertake varied, fast-paced and challenging work for Norfolk Constabulary. The Legal Services Department provides legal advice and representation to the Chief Constable, the Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner and to our collaborative police partners.
The work undertaken by the Department is wide ranging and includes operational advice and orders, civil actions against the police, police misconduct, inquests, disclosure, employment and commercial law. Lawyers working within the Department can expect a varied and challenging caseload.
Post 1: Civil Litigation
You will have conduct of a varied caseload of civil claims against the police (pre-action and issued claims), including public liability claims for wrongful arrest / false imprisonment, assault / battery, malicious prosecution, misfeasance in public office, breach of ECHR, data breaches, defamation, property damage, etc. You will also conduct employer's liability claims, injury motor claims and judicial reviews. You will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or fully qualified Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and will have substantial, recent experience of managing your own civil litigation caseload.
Post 2: Executive and Operational Support
You will assist with a varied case load that will include: inquests, public inquiries, police powers and operational policing advice and representation. The role will include applications before the Magistrates' Court for orders including stalking, domestic violence, and anti-social behaviour. You will be a qualified solicitor, barrister or fully qualified Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives, with an ability and keenness to learn new areas of law. You will, ideally, have knowledge of criminal law and proceedings and civil orders in the Magistrates' Court.
Consideration will be given to whether the posts can be delivered on either a part time or job share basis, in line with the organisational requirements of this role. Opportunities may also be available for working compressed hours and for some homeworking.
