18 St John Street Chambers is a large and progressive barristers’ Chambers based in Manchester. The set is highly regarded by other legal professionals and is well reputed for its work. Some of its practitioners are ranked regionally and nationally in the Legal 500 and in Chambers and Partners Directory.
It has 75 members of all levels of seniority, from pupils to QCs, across 4 main areas of practice: Business & Property; Civil & Personal Injury; Criminal Law; and Family Law. Chambers also has a team of about 20 who provide clerking and administrative support.
Chambers is on a positive journey with high aspirations and has decided that it is now time to appoint a Chambers Director in order to provide a more strategic approach to business development and marketing - bringing high quality work into Chambers at all levels, widening the range of instructing solicitors, and empowering individuals to meet high aspirations for their practices. As Chambers Director, you will be Chambers’ most senior employee and will report directly to the Management Committee. You will lead and manage the senior clerks (of whom there are 3) and will work closely with the Chambers Manager, who leads the administrative teams on a day-to-day basis.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to combine your business development acumen and your leadership skills in order to evolve and grow the business of 18 St John Street Chambers.
It is important for you to be able to demonstrate the following attributes:
- Understanding of how legal businesses such as Chambers and firms of solicitors operate, ideally with some practical experience
- Leadership, directorial or C-suite level experience, or equivalent, including experience of working with a non-executive Board
- Experience in strategy development and implementation
- Understanding of change management processes
- Networking and client-facing skills
- A track record in winning new clients and forming longstanding relationships
- Demonstrable people leadership skills with experience of people management, a keen interest in developing yourself as a leader and the confidence to challenge accepted ways of working
