The new Sentencing Council, which came into being in April 2010, was set up as a result of concern about the size of the prison population, Lord Justice Leveson has said in a speech to the Criminal Bar Association annual conference in May. Leveson LJ, Chair of the Council, said the new body would streamline work, offer support to judges and suggest improvements.
